Mystery, Rapture and Conjure Win Division at MLK

January 19, 2010

Congratulations to Mystery, Rapture and Conjure for winning their respective divisions at the MLK Kick-Off Classic! The three day tournament in Lancaster, PA was a huge success for our club!

After a rough start in Buffalo for the Can-Am Blizzard Bash tournament, Mystery came out strong at the MLK Kick-Off Classic, and did not let up the entire tournament. The first day, the girls beat the #1 seed in the 18’s club division, and remained on top the rest of the weekend. Everyone made vast contributions and the team was able to mix up the line-ups quite a bit, not using the same one twice. By going undefeated the first two days, the girls earned themselves a bye into the semi-finals on Monday where they beat Westmoreland for the second time that weekend. The finals proved to be a tough fight as they split and had to play a deciding game to 15. After being down 5-7, the girls dug deep, and Marissa King closed out the 3rd game of the finals with a 10-point service run to the victory 15-7. We are very proud of the hard work and effort the girls contributed this weekend. Congratulations!

Rapture's head coach, Katie Cahill, had the following to say about her players:

"I am so thrilled with the win this weekend. It was a full team effort, all ten players contributed a great deal to the team's success. Our goal this weekend was to improve our play every match, and for the most part we did this. We went 18-2 in games and 8-0 in matches. The finals was decided in the third game with a score of 13-15. The team showed some tremendous heart in the last match. I am so proud of how the team presented themselves this weekend, both on the court and off!"

Conjure decided to play up in the 15-club division to seek out a little tougher challenge. The girls played very well day one and day two winning the pool both days. Coming into the tournament Conjure worked extremely hard on ball control and that is exactly what they did. The girls controlled the ball on all aspects of the game: serving, hitting, passing and defensive was always under control. They controlled the ball and the game. Coach Glover was extremely pleased with their ability to make such few errors this early in the season. Luisa Schirmer, Emily Costello, Gabby Vetere, Riley Eike and Emily Fronk lead the way offensively for Conjure this weekend while Kristen Plukas, Tessa Ooyama and Lydia Ooyama put heart into the word defense. Madison Wickens did a tremendous job running the offensive as setter and constantly kept opponents guessing who was going to get the ball.

After Day one and day two, Conjure advanced to the gold bracket. Our first match was against Pennfield. Many teams looked at Conjure and took them for granted because of their size. They came out swinging and playing crazy defense and walked away easily with a win. (25-14, 25-12). Their next match was against VolleyFX's 15-1s team (Chant). They were by far the toughest team we faced all weekend. Conjure managed to edge out a grueling game one win and then finished off the match. (25-22, 25-13). The semifinal game was against a very big team (Performance). Although they were very strong offensively they struggled controlling the ball and Conjure prevailed (25-12, 25-11).

In the finals Conjure played the Renaissance 15-1s team. This was the opportunity the team came to PA for, a chance to win it all. They came out very aggressive and controlled the match from the very first point (25-13, 25-12). In the grand scheme of things, the Conjure girls played very good volleyball all weekend and earned their first gold medal of the season. Conjure went 20-0 for the weekend scoring 500 pts and giving up only 259 pts which averages a little less then 13 pts per game!
