VollyFX
opened their official tournament season with a bang at the Storm Tournament
January 30th. With four teams participating in the 16 team tourney,
VFX was out in full force... and represented well.
Mantra (16's) won the Silver Division after beating Buffalo VB Hammers
in the Semi-Finals and Cheetah 17's in the finals.
Rapture (17's) captured first place in the Gold Division. They came from
behind a first game loss to defeat VFX Illusion (18's) in a very close,
well played match. Rapture and Illusion both showed skill and confidence
in their first competition of the year. Head coach Jason Pariseau stated
after the match that, "It is fun to come to a tournament like this
and see our club represent well." He continued stating, "To
face off against Illusion in the finals of the Gold was bittersweet.
Nice to see us (both) here, yet one of us has to lose."
Magic (18's) swept through pool play undefeated in both match and game
play, and took the Championship Bracket defeating Storm El Nino 28-26
and 25-11 in the Semi-Finals and Cheetah Seniors 25-17 and 25-16. Magic
extends its consecutive streak of local (WEVA/Cortland) Junior Tournament
Championships to 7 dating back to Cortland 2003. When asked about the
streak and the win, team leader Steph Jansma said, "We will enjoy
this win, and enjoy building on the rich tradition of this team and club.
But, we made many mistakes today and are still working hard to be at
the level that we want to be." Rachel Smith added, "Winning
is fun, but now we will start training for Early Bird. I am sure we will
have a tough few weeks of practice ahead of us."
Congrats to all.
