VFX hosted their first tournament of the season March 5th & 6th at numerous sites across the Rochester area. This premier tournament attracted 100 teams including teams from Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Toronto and Long Island. Below is an overview of all of our teams successes:

Magic 18-1’s - Place First in the 18 Gold Bracket

Magic continued their consecutive Streak of New York State Tournament Wins dating back to 2003 finishing first in the 18 gold bracket. They swept
through pool play, power pool and playoffs without even a game loss! Great play was seen by seniors Sarah Podlesh, Kate Love and Molly Malone. Sophomore sensation Lindsey Schlegel commented that “it was really neat to see all of the VFX teams do so well this weekend, it makes you proud to be part of the club.” She continued stating that, “VFX looks good, we are strong in all age brackets, that is exciting to see.”

Illusion 18-2’s - Finish Second in the 18 Gold Bracket

Illusion 18-2’s came out first in their first pool after splitting with Onondaga 18-1, and beating both of the other teams. In the next pool, the power pool, they came out second, behind the Southern Tier 18-1’s. Moving into the Gold Division playoffs, they faced off against TIVA Elite in the first round and beat them the first game and fought back from 18-7 deficit to win 25-21 in game 2. After defeating Xtreme 18-1's in two straight games, they faced off against sister team VFX Rapture in the semis and ended up winning in three games.
They concluded their great run with a second place finish after losing to VFX Magic in the finals. Coach Kevin Conley said, “these girls are all heart, they had a great tournament we just ran out of gas in the end. Because of this we are more prepared for Baystate on March 12th.”

Rapture 17-1’s – Finish Third in the 18 Gold Bracket

Rapture came out second in the first pool splitting with TIVA 18-2, and second in the second pool losing to Onondaga 18-1. In the playoffs, they revenged their split with TIVA 18-2’s by defeating them in two. In the quarterfinals, they moved on and beat Storm 18-1’s. In the Semi’s they faced off against VFX Illusion, and lost in a hard fought three games. Coach Jason Pariseau said, “I was pleased with the results and finishing 3rd overall, it showed me some areas we need to work on in preparation for future tournaments.”

Mantra 16-1’s - Finish First in the 17 Silver Bracket

Mantra went 5-1 in the first pool play, advancing to the power pool and beat Cheetah 17-1s. Continuing on Mantra beat Storm 16-1s 25-6, and then lost 17-25 and 20-25. Mantra went into Gold seeded 2nd overall but lost to Storm 17-2s in three games. As a result they were knocked into the silver division but finished first beating Storm 16-1s in a great three game match in the Silver finals. Coach Chris Parks said, “we had a overall a solid tournament, we learned a lot, not just about playing but also the importance of club sportsmanship.”

Charm 16-2’s - Finish Second in the 16 Diamond Bracket

The Charm team had a great deal of success over at the tournament The most exciting game was in the semi-finals against the North Albany Coconuts who Charm defeated in two 25-22 and 25-19. Charm faced off in the Diamond finals against Primo 16-1 and ended up second after two hard - fought games.

Chant 15-1’s - Finish Second in the 16 Gold Bracket

Chant had an overall successful tournament - Placing first in the first pool and second in the second power pool splitting games with Cheetah Paws (beating them on points) but dropped a game to Southern Tier Falcons 25-23 making them second.... Finished 2nd place in Gold Division losing to Cheetah Paws (16-1) in two games in the finals. Coach Cindy D'Errico said, “We fought back from being down but couldn't finish the match, these girls played great through the entire tournament.”

Summon 15-2 - Win the 15 Gold Bracket

Summon had a terrific weekend, winning the Gold Championship!!! The girls won 16 games over the two days. In the semi-finals they beat a tough Baldwinsville 15-1 team, and then beat a scrappy 14-1 WNY team in the finals. Coach Worsley said, “I feel that the team moved up to a new level in terms of consistency as a result of this weekend - the team is now beginning to play with a lot of confidence.” Bay State is next...

Conjure 14-1’s

Conjure had a good weekend, they finished first in both of the pools on the first day and finishing up the day seeded first in the tournament and receiving the bye into the gold. Coach Matt Glover said, “the girls experienced their first pressure situation when they lost to a team we beat on the first day, but as the girls learned this weekend, anything can happen so play for the moment.”

Spell 14-2’s - Finish Second in the Gold Bracket

Spell had an overall a great tournament - finishing 2nd. The team is really starting to come together. Spell travels to Massachusetts for the Baystate Invitational on March 12th for their first travel tournament.
