VFX Magic Wins Big at Big South - Enjoying the Great Weather, and a Trip back to Atlanta with an Open National Bid!

Big South wrapped Sunday afternoon with more than a fistful of compelling storylines, which I will try to do justice to in this report...

Of all the Open fields we covered at Big South, 18 Open was the smallest, which is good news when you're staring at an impending flight to Los Angeles and have to wrap up a wrap up. It also was the weakest field of the three 18 Open qualifiers to date, meaning there are a bunch of teams kicking themselves today for not having gone to Atlanta. I know, since I've heard from several coaches on this subject in the last few days.

Great storylines, however, don't care about field strength and, at the end of the day, the three teams that qualified at Big South, Triangle, Team Z Orange and VolleyFx, all are Open quality and deserving of a return trip to Atlanta in the Open division.

The first of several showdowns took place first thing Sunday morning in a pool worthy of Indianapolis (where the 500 is run) because of all the twists and turns. Triangle led VolleyFX 19-17 in Game 1 before pulling away for the win by scoring six of the final seven points. Tara Enzweiler and Christine Falcone were instrumental in the outcome, as was Hodge, whose winning kill knocked down Alyssa D'Errico, her future Penn State teammate.
