This past weekend was the Southern Tier Classic in Cortland. Always
known as being a fun and light tournament where VFX has had much success,
players have had fun and parents, coaches and players bonded closer as
the year draws to an end. This year proved much of the same, with the
usual success for the club.
18's Division:
VolleyFX represented well in the 18's division. Going in seeded 1st overall
was Illusion, and 11th overall (Magic - winner of the Southern Tier
Classic 2003 & 2004). Both squads were depleted throughout the
weekend with players at proms, taking tests and finishing up senior
responsibilities, yet both dominated the field! With Illusion holding
its ranking and going undefeated in match play up to the finals, with
a 22-2 record leading into the finals, and Magic doing its usual and
outclassing the field with an unscathed 22-0 mark. The finals, featured
both VFX teams and was a fun match with Magic edging out Illusion 2-0
(props to both teams who also faced off, showing VFX dominance in the
VFX Winter Challenge).
16's Division:
Chant 15-1’s stepped up over the weekend of May 7th and brought
home a Championship in the 16’s bracket of the 2005 Southern Tier
Classic in Cortland. Chant swept through pool play with an overall record
of 21 and 1 with a perfect match record. A very exciting finals match
with Cheetah Paws 16-1’s culminated the weekend. Chant came out
slow losing the first game. They quickly turned around the momentum and
took the final 2 games with the tie breaking game with a score of 15
to 12 brought home the victory. Coaches Tara Jehlen and Cindy D’Errico
said they pleased to see the continued development of the team as they
prepare for East Coast Championships over Memorial Day weekend and the
Nationals in Salt Lake at the end of June.
Summon team played up in 16's this weekend at Cortland. They played
well and had a successful weekend. On Saturday morning they finished
3rd in their pool, losing to WNY 16-1's and Cheetah 16-2's. In the afternoon
they won their pool sweeping all 6 games. Sunday morning they won their
pool, giving them the #1 seed in the Gold Division. In the Semi-finals
they split the first 2 games and lost a close tie breaker to the Cheetah
15-1's. Overall a great weekend for the girls.
14's Division:
Conjure finished the 1st day tied for 1st in the pool, losing the point
differential so coming out second. The next day they went 7-3, losing
to Storm Cell (14-1) in the semi's 25-18, 25-17. After a slow start
at times, Conjure was superb this weekedn, not only did they make the
championship bracket, they finished 3rd in the whole tourney! One of
the biggest moments was when they we beat the 14-1 Cheetah Dumas 25-13!
Finishing a great weekend 17-5, and rapping up 3rd place! In the big
picture, its all about competing and getting better. Getting those
chances to play the better teams and taking pieces when you leave.
Conjure left the tournament with the respect of many teams.
Spell:
Spell did not have quite the weekend Conjure enjoyed. Having the #2 and
#3 teams in WEVA (Cheetah 14-1 and Storm 14-2) and Crosscourt Thunder,
that beat Cheetah 25-12, in our first pool. We wound up losing in Silver
Semis. Highlights included a wonderful match against Cheetah that the
girls will never forget. Spell really bonded this weekend and that
is what matters most.
